POLICE CONFIRMS DEATH OF PATIENCE JONATHAN'S MOTHER

THE Rivers State Police Command on Tuesday confirmed the death of the adopted mother of the wife of the President, Patience Jonathan, Mrs. Charity Oba, in an auto crash on Monday. Oba was on her way to Bayelsa State when the vehicle conveying her, a Toyota Corolla saloon car, got involved in an accident along Isiokpo-Elele road in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

A rights group, Women Empowerment and Legal Aid, has given 30 days ultimatum to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Adoke, to prosecute Senator Ahmed Yerima, for marrying a 13-year-old girl.Founder and Chairperson of the organisation, Mrs. Funmi Falana, who addressed journalists in Lagos on Tuesday, said Yerima’s marriage to the Egyptian girl in 2010 was a violation of Section 23 of the Child Rights Act.She said her organisation would apply for a fiat to prosecute Yerima privately if after the expiration of the ultimatum, the AGF failed to heed its call.

LATEST:: NIGERIA LABOUR CONGRESS (NLC) THREATENS TO JOIN ASUU STRIKE ?

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Monday threatened to join the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in solidarity strike if the Federal Government failed to address the ASUU demands. NLC President, Abdulwaheed Omar, made the threat at the opening ceremony of the “2013 Rain School” in Uyo. “We call on the Federal Government to have meaningful dialogue with ASUU with a view to implementing the agreement.

“The State Governments should equally obey the law and pay minimum wage to teachers and the local government workers as well as the 27.5 per cent teacher’s enhanced salaries.

“Should these strikes persist, workers of Nigeria will not hesitate to join them in solidarity,” he stressed.

A TOUCHING STORY :: DEATH BY SOCIAL MEDIA - SHOLA FAGORUSI

I was going to be a witness to murder. The year was 2002. With a child strapped on her back and the phone firmly glued to her right ear, talking and gesticulating, she alighted from the bus and made to cross the road almost instantly. What this lady did not see was another vehicle snaking through the bend with speed. The next thing I heard was the screeching of the brake. The next I saw was a visibly frightened woman with a smiling child oblivious of the kiss and embrace with death that would have been.

Today, phones have become smarter; having more functions and accessories. Calling, answering phone calls, sending text messages and receiving same have become the elementary functions of phones. They now do more than that. Earlier this month, 11 years after that incident, a couple of dailies and online news sites reported a similar story but with a sad ending.

Scott Alexander Greenberg, 28, of St Petersburg, Florida, killed Kelly Damon Harding, 48, at Pinellas County Jail in the early hours of Sunday morning after telling fellow inmates he would rather be executed than spend the rest of his life in prison.

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said it was the first time in his 31 years that he heard of an inmate kill another at the jail.
