[ POLITICS ] : GOVERNOR FASHOLA NOMINATES "GBELEYI" AS NEW FINANCE COMMISSIONER

The Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola (SAN) has nominated Ayodeji Gbeleyi as the new commissioner for finance. Mr. Gbeleyi, is the Director-General of the State’s Office of Public – Private Partnerships (PPP) and currently the special adviser to Fashola on PPP. Mr. Ayodeji is a Fellow of the Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA), an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), an alumnus of the Harvard Kennedy School, the London Business School, Lagos Business School and an MBA holder from the International Graduate School of Management, University of Navarra, Barcelona, Spain. He is to succeed Mr. Tokunbo Abiru who recently resigned as finance commissioner if the nomination is approved by the State’s Cabinet.

A suspected fraudster,Gbenga Ogunmefun, has been caught by his victims at the Ijagemo area of Lagos State, southwest Nigeria.The man, Gbenga Ogunmefun, posed as a herbalist, an estate agent and phone repairer to defraud at least ten people of various amounts of money. According to sources, Gbenga Ogunmefun, posed as a herbalist and collected the sum of N30,000 from a woman called Morufa, a housewife, after being unable to heal her he adamantly refused to refund her money. Ogunmefun who lives in Bada compound, Baba Fatia’s house, Ijagemo, allegedly collected phones and cash from a man called Aro, a lady called Vivian and another woman known as Iya Falda.

Kano bomb blast: Ohanaeze Ndigbo demands protection for non-natives

According to what was gathered from sunNews, Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo recently disputed the figures that the Joint Task Force released saying the Monday bomb blasts in Kano had not killed 12 as they reported but 45 and most of the victims were Igbos. Now the Kano State chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to move towards protecting the Igbos living in Kano.

President of the group, Tobias Idika in a statement, said: “Ndigbo in Kano call on President Goodluck Jonathan to make haste and protect the lives of citizens resident in the northern part of the country, particularly, in Kano.”

[BREAKING NEWS ] :- E-TICKET FOR BRT BUSES LAUNCHED IN LAGOS

Commuters in Lagos can now pay as low as N20 depending on the distance of their journey using the newly launched electronic ticket for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in the state metropolis.Lagos state Deputy Governor, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire commissioned the e-ticketing at the CMS Bus Stop in Lagos yesterday, and described the initiative as the newest way of alleviating poverty among the residents of the state. “It is part of the integrated model transportation we are doing in Lagos. With this, we have made the transportation system more friendly and efficient for the people of Lagos State.

Commuters will save a lot of money using this card because they don’t have to pay for the charges of the entire route destination. They will be charged based on where they alight from the bus,” she said.

According to Orelope-Adefulire, the e-ticketing is designed to solve some of the problems associated with the old ticketing system of the BRT buses, and the government was committed to continuously improve on the transportation system of the state.

According to info that was gathered from Vanguard ,Following the death of about 20 people in Sabon Gari, Kano on Monday after what was said to be a terror attack, five people were killed yesterday in Tapga Village of Ibi Local Government Area of Taraba state after armed militia group the village. Reports indicate that the armed militia group had come from a neighbouring village called Tarok.

The attack also left a lot of people injured who had said they were taken by surprise and many more had to flee their homes for safety. The injured were said to have been taken to some clinics in Wukari and Ibi towns for treatment. It could not however be ascertained the reason for the attack,

A gang who laughed as they doused a woman in acid while she walked her six-year-old twins home from school have been jailed for a total of 44 years. The attackers was heard laughing as the noxious liquid was sprayed at the screaming mother in front of her two boys outside Upton Cross Primary School in Upton Park, east London.Speaking after the attack the woman, who suffered horrendous burns to her face and body, said: ‘I saw a man approach me who was carrying something in a bottle. ‘He threw it over me and after a few seconds it started burning. I was crying: “Please help me! Please help me!”‘

UPDATE ON ASUU STRIKE : Lecturers yet to agree as meeting with FG is postponed

The meeting between university lecturers and the Federal Government concerning the on-going strike that held on Monday is rescheduled to hold on Thursday as contending issues were not resolved.
Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, lecturers, government delegates led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, met on Monday, in Abuja.

Premium Times reports:

The lecturers demand full implementation of a 2009 agreement and a 2011 memorandum of understanding they had with the government on various issues ranging from university autonomy, to funding, and lecturers’ remuneration. The government has said it wants a renegotiation of some parts of the 2009 agreement.
Mr. Fagge said the government also presented its position on the implementation of the agreement adding that “the next meeting would be on Thursday still on the implementation of the agreement.”
ASUU has been on an indefinite strike since July 1 with hundreds of thousands of university students forced to stay away from classes.The President of ASUU, Nasir Fagge, told PREMIUM TIMES that Monday’s meeting held and the union was there to make its presentation after it had discussed with its principals.

According to the information that was gathered from Daily mail online, a mother whose four-year-old son snorted her cocaine has been sentenced to five years on a child abuse charge.Carrie Ann Billups, from Virginia, pleaded guilty to the felony charge in April and was handed down the sentence yesterday. Chesapeake Circuit Judge Marjorie Arrington gave Billups a five-year sentence on Monday and then suspended four years of the term. Arrington gave Billups credit for five months she's already spent in jail. Court records show that the 26-year-old Billups bought $10 worth of cocaine and hid it under a lamp in her bedroom.

An 11-year old girl, Ita Bassey-Eno, was allegedly set ablaze by her guardian, Nkese Iroakazi, a nurse at a hospital in Surulere. The victim has been rushed to the General Hospital, Gbagada where doctors are battling to save her life.

Mrs Iroakazi who resides at 7, Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, was said to have doused the girl with kerosene and lit a match stick to set her ablaze after allegedly stealing a piece of meat from the pot.

United Kingdom Business Secretary, Vince Cable, has urged his home country to scrap plans to make certain overseas visitors to Britain pay a £3,000 bond to obtain tourist visas because it sends out the “wrong message” about the country. In his second attack on the policy within 48 hours, Cable told the Financial Times that Number 10’s (Prime Minister’s residence) determination to press on with the visitor bond pilot in November was “disappointing.”

He said, “It is very disappointing and it has not been agreed across the coalition and it seems to send the wrong message that Britain is closed for business.”

COURT NULLIFIES DEREGISTRATION OF PARTIES BY INEC

An Abuja Federal High Court on Monday voided the deregistration of 28 political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The court, presided over by Justice Gabriel Kolawole, also declared section 78 (7) (ii) of the Electoral Act 2010, as amended, which stipulates that political parties must win seats during state and National Assembly elections, as null and void.

INEC had while announcing the deregistration of the 28 parties on December 6, 2012 predicated its action on the section and the 1999 Constitution.

However, one of the deregistered parties, Fresh Democratic Party, and its presidential candidate in 2011, Rev. Chris Okotie, challenged the action at the Abuja FHC. They argued that it breached their fundamental rights as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution.

A 36-yearold Nigerian, Christopher Olua and a Cape Verdean, Rosangela Correia, 36, have been arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for illegally importing two kilogrammes of cocaine.

CULLED FROM PUNCH::

Correia and Olua were arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. They were said to have hidden the drug in lady’s handbags.

NDLEA, Lagos Airport Commander, Mr. Hamza Umar, told PUNCH Metro that the drug was discovered during the inward screening of Emirate passengers at the arrival hall.

Hamza said, “We have obtained Correia’s statement through the aid of a language interpreter; it was in portugese. Both suspects are cooperating with authorities in the investigation. Correia claimed that she owned a restaurant in Cape Verde.

Sources indicates that popular comedian , Seyi Law has penned a deal with electronic and mobile phones manufacturing giant, Samsung as their brand ambassador. The talented and gifted rib cracker was said to have signed the deal with Samsung not too long ago.
Though details of the contract was not disclosed to us, a source who should know squealed that Seyi, who also married some months ago, smiled to the bank with a seven digit figure. Read full story here . Emelia Brobbey just arrived in Ghana. She was met at the airport by many colleague actors who came to support her, chanting songs of victory on her arrival. She said in a televised press briefing that she had been wrongfully represented in the press. She said the incident happened when a bracelet accidentally fell into her baby carriage without knowing it until the alarm beeped when she was about leaving the shop, to signify that she had on her items that had not been paid for. She said she explained to the security and even paid for it when the shop attendant asked if she wanted to keep the bracelet. She hinted that she was pursued later by police after she had given her address because she was perceived to be in the country illegally.
