Chris Brown Claims First Amendment Protection in Fight Over Graffiti Artwork

Breezy uses the Constitution as defense in battle against neighbors. Chris Brown's love for graffiti has outraged neighbors near his L.A. home and thanks to the U.S. Constitution, the R&B singer refuses to back down. Brown says the First Amendment (freedom of speech) allows him to throw up colorful concoctions on his home no matter what the city of L.A. — or anyone else — thinks about it. The 24-year-old filed a legal response to a $376 ticket he was ordered to pay for the murals, TMZ reports...........

In the paperwork, Brown denies that his spray painted pieces are damaging to the value, believing that they enhance "the architectural and aesthetic features" of the property.

"The murals are a reflection of [my] aesthetic taste and a reflection of free speech and expression protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution," he said.

For now, Breezy's case is being heard by the Dept. of Buildings and Safety board of appeals, but if they don't buy the excuse he has another shot. The discrepancy can be taken to the L.A County Superior Court, and even the Supreme Court, if necessary.

Neighbors accuse Brown's artwork of scaring children because of the monster-like qualities, large teeth, grimacing images, and skeletal frames. "There are lots of babies, lots of children, and they're literally frightened. It's like devils on the wall — big scary eyes and big scary teeth, and just the whole vibe is not what we're used to," Hollywood Dell Civic Association President Patti Negri said last month. "We're happy to have him [in the neighborhood] if he just tones it down.

The "Fine China" singer doesn't just make art as a hobby, he also uses the talent for a good cause. In March, Brown teamed with graffiti artist Slick to create original work to be sold to benefit Best Buddies International, a non-profit aimed at creating "opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development" for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
